Valencia Sherman-Greenup is an October 2020 graduate of Georgetown University Law Center where she was a Blume Public Interest Law Scholar. While in law school, she served as an Executive Editor for Georgetown Law Journal’s Annual Review of Criminal Procedure, the Chair of Recruitment and Retention for the Black Law Students Association, and her section’s representative for the Student Bar Association.
Valencia received bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration and Spanish, as well as a Master’s in Business Administration from Florida A & M University. Prior to attending law school, Valencia was a clinical research coordinator at Columbia University Medical Center where she coordinated breast cancer and liver disease research trials. She also had many years of experience managing affordable housing in Harlem, NY. However, she considers her most important role to be caring for her elderly father in his battle against cancer.
Valencia’s experiences inspired her to attend law school to become an advocate for the needs of underserved communities, especially elders, in healthcare and housing. In pursuit of her goals, Valencia interned in the Health Law Group at New York Legal Aid Society and the Abortion Rights and Women’s Health Group at the National Women’s Law Center. The summer of 2020, Valencia was the Racial Justice Fellow at Justice in Aging where her work included researching cases involving the anti-discrimination clause of the Affordable Care Act, the implications of the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act on civil rights claims, and equity issues highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Valencia will serve as a 2021-2022 Borchard Fellow at Justice in Aging. Her project will focus on increasing access to Medicaid Home and Community Based Services with a focus on improving racial equity.
