Annie Mullican

2020-2021

Originally from Terre Haute, Indiana, Annie Mullican is a May 2020 graduate of the University of Richmond Law School. Prior to law school, Annie attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, where she received a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature and was a member of the Women's Cross Country and Track & Field teams. During law school, she served as Articles Editor on the Journal of Law & Technology and President of the Animal Law Society, and was a recipient of her school's Pro-Bono Certification Award. Annie also volunteered at a Pro-Bono Tax Clinic in Richmond and served as Assistant Coach for Kids Run RVA, a program that provides opportunities for elementary and middle school students in the Richmond area to be more active. Annie was first introduced to the issues facing lower income elders when she worked at her law school's Aging & Disability Clinic, a Medical-Legal Partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University's medical, nursing, social work and pharmacy students, at Dominion Place, an assisted living facility in downtown Richmond. During her time in the Aging & Disability Clinic, Annie's team addressed legal issues while VCU students addressed medical issues to provide residents with holistic care and promote overall wellness.

As a 2020-2021 Borchard Fellow, Annie will work under VCU's Medical-Legal Partnership program to create and coordinate comprehensive education, outreach, and other direct services to older adults and other vulnerable populations in the Richmond area. Annie plans to continue the work she participated in at Dominion Place of conducting and participating in clinics to provide low-income elders and families with wills, powers of attorney, and advance medical directives. The goal of the project is to cultivate a more prepared aging population in Richmond and to reduce the need for guardianships.
