2012-2013

As a 2012-2013 Borchard Fellow, Jordan Sartell will join Prairie State Legal Services in Wheaton, Illinois. Prairie State Legal Services has been providing free legal services to qualifying residents of northern Illinois since 1977. In partnership with local elder abuse investigators, Jordan will represent older adults affected by financial exploitation, consumer fraud, and a wide range of other civil matters. He will also develop educational materials for laypeople appointed by older adults as property agents under the Illinois Power of Attorney Act. Jordan will engage in community education presentations, and ensure that the materials are available in print and online, enabling trusted caregivers throughout Illinois to provide for their elderly loved ones in conformity with their fiduciary responsibilities.

Jordan’s interest in consumer protection law drew him to working with older adults and will continue to influence his career in law and aging. While in law school, Jordan worked with Prairie State Legal Services and DuPage County Senior Services as a registered elder abuse investigator to mitigate elder financial exploitation. He also worked with the Illinois Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Bureau investigating unfair and deceptive business practices that targeted older adults, and with the Center for Disability and Elder Law, assisting seniors affected by fraud and other consumer financial issues.

Jordan graduated summa cum laude from DePaul University College of Law in 2012. In 2005, he graduated with a B.A. in Economics from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. Jordan and his wife Laura live in Wheaton, Illinois.
