Paul Black

2010-2011

Paul Black graduated from Georgia State University College of Law in May 2010. A native of Albany, Georgia, Mr. Black earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University in 2002, and subsequently clerked for a large Atlanta law firm before earning a Master’s degree and teaching high school and coaching cross-country for two years. Mr. Black’s interest in elder law stems from his experiences helping immediate family members confront some of the challenges of aging and disability. As a student at GSU Law, Mr. Black gained exposure to consumer and healthcare issues in the Tax Clinic, Health Law Partnership Clinic, and work experiences with Atlanta Legal Aid Society’s Senior Citizens Law Project and the Georgia Senior Legal Hotline. His paper, “Reverse Mortgages and the Current Financial Crisis,” was published in the Fall 2009 National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) Student Journal, and may be published in a future issue of the main NAELA Journal.

As a 2010-2011 Borchard Fellow, Mr. Black will conduct an outcomes survey for the Georgia Senior Legal Hotline. In particular, he will be speaking by phone with hundreds of past Hotline clients to learn more about the effectiveness of the legal advice provided, and to identify obstacles that clients face in following through on the advice. In a time of tight budgets coupled with a growing need for legal advice and social service referrals for Georgia’s seniors, these findings will help strengthen the Hotline’s effectiveness, and will be presented in an article and in presentations to Area Agencies on Aging and similar groups. Mr. Black is also excited to work with students at GSU Law to organize a spring 2011 panel discussion of local medical, financial, and legal professionals on detecting and preventing physical and financial abuse of Georgia seniors.
